The role of the scribes is to read and write manuscripts. They do so because there was a need for multiplication of notes for people to keep and children to study as there weren't printers at that time. The major problem faced by the scribes were that due to bad handwriting, the others might have copied different words which completely changed the meaning of the sentence written.
