Transition metals belong to the d-block of the periodic table of the elements.

There is some exception between it like, Scandium and Zinc are not transition metals. For a d-block element to be a transition metal, it must have possess an incompletely filled d-orbital.

The major reason of transition metals are good catalysts is that they can appoint the electrons or withdraw electrons from the reagent, according to the nature of the reaction.
