During fermentation process yeast kills itself by converting the sugars (C₁₂H₂₂O₁₁) found in grapes to ethyl alcohol. Alcohol can be separated from this mixture of yeast and other formed products by distillation process.

Aim:
Aim: To study fermentation of sugar into alcohol by the action of yeast.
Materials required:
sugar, cups, lukewarm water, yeast
Procedure:
Take lukewarm water in a cup and add 3-4 teaspoons of sugar to it. Stir it well. Now, add half teaspoon of yeast to this solution. Cover the cup and keep it undisturbed for about 5-6 hours. After the said time, open the lid. You will smell alcohol. The yeast, that we added, fermented the sugar in the cup and converted into alcohol.
