Before the arrival of Mauryas, the Nanda dynasty was ruling India from 345 to 322 BCE.

This dynasty was founded by Mahapadma Nanda by overthrowing the Shisunaga dynasty from India. He captured the capital of Magadha and establish a large empire covering the modern day Afghanistan region.

The administration of Nandas were:-

  • There is not much information about the administrative situation during Nandas. King was holding the highest position and sworned by the title of "Ekrat".
  • It was appeared as the Monarchy ruling the state of Magadha.
  • Due to its major location near the Ganga plains, the land was immensely possessed by the king and land grants was used to made.

  • The most practised religion during this time was Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism.

Dhananda was the last nanda ruler who was overthrowned by Chandra Gupta Maurya and Maurya Dynasty came into existence.
