Rules for writing resonance are as follows:
(1) Octet rule should not be violated.
(2) net charge at each canonical structure should be same
(3) number of unpaired electron should be same.
(4) position of atom in each canonical structure should be same.
(5) Relatively , very less stable canonical structure are not taken into consideration.
(6) Resonance can only be possible if the π-electrons are conjugated.

Rules to remember for recognising resonance structures:
Atoms never move. You can only move electrons in π bonds or lone pairs (that are in p orbitals) The overall charge of the system must remain the same. The bonding framework of a molecule must remain intact.
