Hugo de Vries by his experiment suggest that variation is caused due to mutation among the genetic sequence of an individual. Hugo de Vries for the first time gave the term saltation which stands for huge mutation in a single step resulting in speciation.

Darwin during his voyage in H.M.S Beagle he found that living organism share similar features existed from millions of years.

Evolution is a sequential process that leads to betterment of life forms to cope with the change in environment and that is passed into successive generation, called as natural selection. Mutation is a random process and direction of which is not specific.

Answer.

&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;Hugo deVries based on his work on evening primrose brought forth the idea of mutations. According to him, mutations are large differences arising in a population suddenly. He believed that it is mutation which causes evolution not the minor heritable variations. According to him these mutations are directionless and random. DeVries believed mutation caused speciation and hence called it saltation (single step large mutation).<br />According to Darwin's theory of Natural selection evolution took place due to minor variations which were heritable. According to him, these variations are small and directional. According to Darwin evolution was a gradual process ns. while deVries believed that a sudden mutation causes speciation.
