A sand clock was used by the Romans ,worked on the principle that all sand from the upper chamber on a fixed amount of time .

Sandclock :-  A instrument for measuring time, consist of two glass Chambers connected by a narrow nack and containing a quantity of sand, Mercury or another flowing substance that trickles from the upper chamber to the lower in a fixed a fixed amount of time, often one hour.
