Numerical taxonomy is a system in biological classification in which grouping of species is done by using numerical methods based on character states of species.

The concept of numerical taxanomy was first proposed by Robert R. Sokal and Peter H. A. Sneath in 1963. The numerical taxanomy was developed with the purpose to classify species into natural taxa. There three types of taxanomic relationship that includes Phenetic, which is based on the overall simiarity in the species; Cladistic which is based on the common line of descent; and Chronistic, which is an temporary relation between different species.
The scope of numerical taxanomy has been explained by several authors which states that more information in the taxa of classification system will provide better classification of species. Significance of numerical taxanomy is as following:
