The oblate spheroid, or oblate ellipsoid, is an ellipsoid of revolution obtained by rotating an ellipse about its shorter axis. It is the regular geometric shape that most nearly approximates the shape of the Earth. A spheroid describing the figure of the Earth or other celestial body is called a reference ellipsoid

Shape of the Earth

Following arguments proved that the Earth is not flat but spherical in shape :

1. Sailors like Magellan and Drake, who sailed around the world and started from one point and sale in the same direction at last they reached at the same spot. If the earth has been flat they would have reached some abrupt edge.

2. When we see the distant origin from a high peak, ita looks circular in shape.

3. During a lunar eclipse, the shadow of the Earth on the soon is circular in shape. Only a spherical body can cast a circular shadow.

4. The pictures of the earth taken by different astronaut who went into outer space so that the Earth is spherical in shape.

5. While standing on the sea shore when we see a sip coming to what the port we first of all see only its mast. When slowly and slowly it comes nearer and nearer we are able to see its final and finally it's lower part. It simply means that the Earth is round. If the earth had been flat we would have seen the whole ship at one side.
