Meiocytes are the specialised cell present in sexually reproductive organisms(diploid). These meiocytes undergo meiotic division to produce male and female gametes that carry only one set of chromosomes and thus helps in maintaining the chromosomal no. of the organisms ie.23 pairs(total 46 chrm.).

Meiocytes are the cells which undergo meiosis to produce gametes and their chromosome number is same as that of the organism.

These cells act as a precursor of meiosis.

Hence, they directly help in gamete formation.
