India underwent many social and cultural changes under the British.

Social Changes

a. The British brought along with them the ideas of liberty, equality, justice, freedom, human rights which attracted some educated Indians who tried to bring reform in the Indian society by applying these ideas.

b. The British took many legal measures to abolish social evils in India.For example,  the practise of sati was banned in 1829 by Lord Benetinck.Widow remmariage was made legal in 1856.

c.English education was made popular in India under the British.Lord Macaulay supported the promotion of European sciences and literature among the natives of India.

d. Charles Wood demanded the establishment of a network of educational institutions in the country.


Cultural changes:

a. The  British developed a new English culture among the Indians. Indians were attracted by their way of food and dressing and tried to imbibe them.

b.English education bought changes in the mindset of the people. They came to know about the ideas of nationalism and democracy which were later implemented in their struggle for freedom.

c. Indians got to know about the new English culture, its richness and beauty.
