Social and Religious Causes

Under the early British rule there was a General feeling that the religion and Society of the India where in danger of being destroyed by western influence. Introduction a western education, legislation, abolishing sati, legalising widow remarriage, and missionary activites to spread Christianity, came in quick succession and unsettled the mind of the Indian orthodox sections. Indians Look upon this measures as interference in their social and religious spheres. The religious sentiments where around when the British imposed taxes on the land belonging to temple and mosque. The maulavis and priests toward their discontent against the British rule. The very foreign character of the rule made the British unpopular.
