The caste hierarchy was broken because of the development that happened in the field of Literacy; people moving from one place to another with regard to their occupation; more people leaving their rural areas towards urban areas.  Also, due to the development that happened in the media field.  It highlighted the ill-effects of caste system.

Great leaders like Dr. Ambedkar had helped to form the Fundamental Rights with regard to this and also our Constitution strictly prohibits this discrimination.

\textbf{Decline of the caste system in India }:

1. Social reformers like Phule, Gandhiji etc. made great efforts against the caste system. They aimed to promote a casteless society.

2. Urbanisation has also diminished the awareness of caste, as people rub shoulders in buses etc.

3. Literacy has also increased with education, which had also helped to decrease the belief in caste.
