A horizon : it is also called topsoil. the roots of grasses and small plants reach here.

B horizon : it is also called subsoil. it contains substances washed into it from A horizon above and C horizon below

C horizon : it is also called substratum.

D horizon : it is also called bedrock. it is the deepest layer.
