Destroying the Caste System in India is not as easy as it sounds. While a rational and educated person would assume that general population would also be rational and aware of the virulent vermin that this caste system is, it is not quite so. It has become a part of their lives and their mindset. And to destroy a mindset and create a new one is not an easy task, for it changes the definition of the world that they have grown up in.

However, you can influence this mindset. But this has to be done from the very beginning, when they are growing up, when the mind is learning. You may have come across many individuals who themselves are very liberal in thoughts but their families, parents & grandparents specifically, are quite orthodox. Why is that? The reason is not upbringing, but the environment. Most of such individuals have grown up in metro cities, where the mindset is liberal, and though their parents may not share the same ideology, but the kids learn to be liberal.

As far as the Govt. is concerned, there are some things that a Democratic country like India can promote, but not force onto its people. Destroying Caste System is one of them. Mind you, I'm not saying that Govt. can't penalise you for discriminating people on basis of their caste, but we aren't talking about discriminating, are we? We are talking about making the society a more open place. Govt. can't force anyone to stop associating themselves with the Caste they belong to: it would an attack on the Secularity and Freedom of people. Although, Govt. can definitely take steps to destroy Caste System in India. But these steps will only be effective if they are implemented at ground level. A mere introduction of policies, or new ideology does not help in changing the mindset of people. One needs to Preach, Practice & Believe in the idea one is trying to spread.
