Baking soda or sodium hydrogen carbonate is prepared by a process called solvay process or the ammonia soda process. In this process brine (solution of salt and water) is saturated with ammonia and allowed to react with carbon dioxide gas.

Nacl + h2o + NH4 + CO2 --- nahco3 + h2o.

Solvay's process is essentially just carbonisation of ammonical brine.

First, brine is prepared as :

NaCl + H2O

Then, Ammonia is added to it while passing Carbon dioxide gas.

NaCl + H2O + CO2 + NH3 → NaHCO3 + NH4Cl
