Solvey's process :

solvey process is the process by which sodium carbonate is formed. In this process concentrated solution of sodium chloride is saturated with ammonia , carbon dioxide is passed through it and the product is CALCINED.

  • This process is used to produce large quantities of Na2CO3/ sodium carbonate.
  • In this process , salt i.e., sodium chloride is treated with ammonia and then carbon dioxide producing sodium bicarbonate and ammonium chloride.
  • After this process ammonium chloride usually combined with lime to produce ammonia and calcium chloride.
  • ADVANTAGES : a) It's very low cost process. b) Process is pollution free because the waste product is calcium chloride. c) Less electric power. d) Less corrosion problem. e) Use of low grade brine
