there are generally three states of matter.
1) solid :- solids have fixed shape , mass and volume. these have tendency to maintain their shape.the density in solids is maximum. solids have strong intermolecular force.
2) liquids:- liquids do not have fixed shape but have fixed volume and mass. liquids take the shape of container. density is low than that of solids. particles are loosely packed.
3) gas:- gases neither have fixed shape nor volume but have definite mass. gases exert pressure . particles move randomly at high speed. intermolecular force is very weak and density is low .

There are three different states of matter :

1) Solid
2) Liquid
3) Gas .

SOLID

1) The solids have definite mass , volume and shape .
2) Solid are rigid .
3) A solid does not undergo a change in the shape .
4) There are large attractive forces between molecules in a solid .
5) Solid don't show the property of diffusion .

LIQUID

1) A Liquid has a definite mass , and volume but no definite shape .
2) Liquid have only one free surface .
3) The vacant spaces between the molecules of Liquid are more as compared to solids .
4) The attractive forces between the molecules in a liquid state are lesser than in the solids .
5) On heating a Liquid , the molecules of it move apart , hence the liquid can expand on heating .

GAS

1) A gas has definite mass but it neither definite shape nor definite volume .
2) There are negligible attractive forces between the molecules of a gas .
3) Gas has no free surface .
4) There are large vacant spaces between the molecules of a gas .
5) Gase are highly compressible .
