So....in my opinion this could be the explanation.....
The speaker is trying to say to the listener that he visited the memories (considered as the forest) where the listener had left a impressions (trail of fire)and the phrase trail of fire refers to something negative the listener would have done which enormously affected the thoughts and memories of a listener.
This is my own point of view.....
