Modesty is the chief citadel of beauty and virtue. It is freedom

from conceit or vanity; it is propriety in dress, speech and

conduct. It is always comely, pleasant, attractive-looking,

becoming, pleasing in tidy appearance.

Rebekah demonstrated a beautiful modesty when she saw

Isaac for the first time....she took a veil and covered herself.

Sobriety means habitual inner self-government. A thrilling

and wonderful truth.... that the ornament of meekness and

loveliness in spirit “is in the sight of God of great price.”

There are those who feel that a few little sins – peccadilloes,

or a tiny bit of worldliness will keep them humble and

happy, but these are the little foxes that spoil the grapes of

grace in our lives. Sin humiliates, but it does not make one

humble. If sin made one humble, then Satan would be the

embodiment of humility. On the contrary, he is the epitome

of pride.

We are never told that Dorcas preached with her lips, but her

life was full of good works. I had rather see a sermon than

hear one any day.
