Free and compulsory education for all children upto the age of 14 years is a constitutional mandate to be implemented through out the country. Education is in the concurrent list of the constitution. Both the Centre and the State have equal responsibility here. Although literacy has improved, 100% achievement in this regard and removal of illiteracy from the country is yet to be achieved.

However, for higher education both the Central and State governments have taken many initiatives in setting up technical as well as general and women colleges and universities. Various IITs and IIMs have been set up as higher centres of learning through out the country.
