KATHAK
Kathak is a traditional dance of UTTAR PRADESH which means telling a story through the dance. It is performed by KATHAKAARS or STORYTELLERS. Kathak basically shows the story of lord Krisha and his childhood. Kathak was also performed in the darbar of kings for the entertainment. The word kathak is derieved from Vedic Sanskrit word means "katha". Kathak includes eyes, neck, hands and leg movement. Wearing a GHUNGROO is very important while performing Kathak. Kathak developed in the northern part of India.

Kathak is a classical dance form of India. It is one of the results of the composite culture period. This dance was originally performed in courts for the entertainment of a king and his nobles, but as time passed on this dance became widely accepted. It is believed that the roots of this dance form come from the UP side.

Kathak is unlike any dance form in India. While the focus of Bharatnatyam is on the expressions, us Kathak dancers believe in telling the story through the actions and foot sounds. The art of telling a story through you actions is known as "Kathak".

There are mainly three gharanas (sub parts based on geographical basis), namely:

1. Banaras

2. Jaipur

3. Lucknow

Kathak dancers are dressed traditionally in anarkalis or ghagra-cholis(depending on the gharanas). The make up is very light and subtle like the expressions. The dancers also were ghongroos on their feet to create beautiful sounds.

Hope this helps, if any more content is wanted please ask freely since I am a professional Kathak dancer.
