The solitary reaper
that the poet saw while on his evening walk was working alone in the highland
meadows. She was reaping a crop and also singing all by herself. She was so much engrossed in her work that she
could not sense that the poet was silently watching and admiring her melodious
song. The melody of her voice was sweeter than the imaginary nightingale that
sang sweetly in an Arabian night story. Her voice was much more mellifluous
than the warbling of a cuckoo that sang on the serene islands of Hebrides.
Since the poet did not understand the language she was singing in, he
conjectured she was singing a sad song. The poet kept listening to her song,
and finally resumed his walk, carrying the sweet memories about the experience
with him.
