Peroxisomes are organelles found in nearly all eukaryotic cells. Their existence was first discovered by J. Rhodin in 1954 and they were officially considered organelles in 1967 by Christian de Duve. Their main function is to break down long and branched fatty acid chains, D-amino acids, and polyamines
