Explain the structure of an atom. What is the difference between atomic number and mass number and also mention their relevance in nuclear reaction.

An atom is the basic unit of life. It is the smallest particle of element and may or may not be capable of independent existence. It consists of three sub atomic particles- protons ( positive charge and no mass ) , neutrons ( no charge and unit mass ) , electrons ( negative charge and negligible mass ) The nucleus is found in the centre of atom and contains protons and neutrons. The electrons revolve around the nucleus in imaginary paths called shells / orbits. Atomic number is the number of protons or number of electrons. Z(atomic no.)=p=e Mass number is equal to the total number of protons and neutrons M ( Mass no.) =p+n
