Biogas plant should basically be a water and air-tights container or excavation. it anaerobically converts organic matter into gas called biogas. The plants mostly have inlet to feed the slurry and outlet for collection of effluent. the level of the slurry should not exceed 65% of the total digester volume. gas collection chamber is usually at top of the digester. Depending on the moisture content of the organic matter, equal volume of water is added to the fresh feedstock say cow dung, poultry waste etc. to attain 7% TS.
Biogas plants are fed ones (batch process) or continuously (continuous Process) depending on the requirement and availability of feed-stock. continuous feeding allows continuous biogas production but requires labor for daily activities.
Briefly speaking, the function of biogas plant depends on physio-chemical factors such as temperature and the nature of the feedstock. others include pre-treatment, co-digestion for nutrients’ balance, mixing and Hydraulic Retention Time ( the days in which the slurry remain in the digester before it’s ejected).
the higher the temperature the higher the reaction rate and biogas production, about 40 0C is generally considered as optimum temperature for biogas production, depending on the organic material. some researches have proven 37 to 45 oC as optimum temperature for maximum biogas production. pH of (6.5 -7.2) Carbon to Nitrogen ratio of 27 are generally considered as optimum values.
