It consists of a cell body or cyton, with a central nucleus and cytoplasm containing Nissl's granules. Short, thin branching processes called dendrites arise from the cyton. There also arises a long, cylindrical process calles axon from the cyton.

Cyton or cell body is also called perikaryon or soma and contains granular cytoplasm with large number of network of neurofibrils, various cell organelles like mitochondria, Golgi complex, RER and centrally placed nucleus. They have nucleus with single nucleolus. Has a neurofibrils for conduction of nerve impulses.
