Before the outbreak of the french revolution the society was divided into 3 estates;-

FIRST ESTATE(CLERGY)

This estate comprised of the king and church officials.they lived a luxurious life and they were exempted from paying tax to any body.

SECOND ESTATE(NOBILITY)

This estate comprised of  nobles and warriors of war .They enjoyed feudal privileges.

THIRD ESTATE;

This estate can be referred to as the group of commoners and poor people.This estate included people like lawyers,farmers,court officials,peasants,seamstresses etc...They had to pay all kinds of taxes to both the state and the church.So,in simple terms we can say that the financial burden of the state was through taxes was borne by the state.

The members of the first estates were exempted from paying most of the taxes. The members of the second estates, as they were the nobles, they also paid very fewer taxes. The third estate was badly overtaxed by the monarchy. This overtaxing even became one of the major causes of the revolution in French.
