inGraphite carbon atoms are arranged in flat parallel layer. each carbon atoms in these layer is bonded to three other bonds forming a network of six carbon rings. the fourth valence electron of each carbon is free to move. each layer is bonded to the adjacent layer by weak forces.
as a result, each layer can easily slide over the other
