Mitochondria
- Mitochondria are regarded as the powerhouse of the cell which is responsible for the oxidative phosphorylation inside a cell.
- The mitochondria are a double-membrane-bound organelle which is rod-shaped and are found in both plant and animal cells.
- The size of mitochondria ranges from 0.5 to 1.0 micrometre in diameter.
- A mitochondrion consists of an outer membrane and an inner membrane inside which is the presence of a gel matrix.
- The outer and the inner membrane of mitochondria are made up of phospholipids and proteins which are separated from each other by intermembrane space.
- The outer membrane of the mitochondria consists of a large number of special proteins on their surface known as porins.
