saturated hydrocarbon are fairly unreactive and inert in the presence of most reagents . However,in the presence of sunlight ,chlorine is added to hydrocarbons in a very fast way. Chlorine can replace the hydrogen atoms one by one . It is called substitution reaction because one type or group of atoms takes place of the other one .
The two important compounds formed in the substitution reaction are CH3Cl(chloro methane ) and HCl when Cl2 reacts with methane .
