There is a symbiotic relationship between the legumes which contains root nodules and Rhizobium bacteria. Rhizobia live in the soil. When there is limited soil nitrogen, legumes in symbiotic relationship release flavanoids which sends signal to rhizobia that the plant needs symbiotic bacteria.
