Answer:

This reaction is catalyzed by the enzyme ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase (RUBISCO). The resulting 6-carbon compound breaks down into two molecules of 3-phosphoglyceric acid (PGA). These 3-carbon molecules serve as the starting material for the synthesis of glucose and other food molecules.

Explanation:

  • C₄ plants are the plants which are adapted to survive in the hot and humid climate.
  • The plants in these areas avoid excessive heat by closing their stomata to reduce the loss of water through transpiration.
  • As a result of the closure of stomata, plant start performing photorespiration which is harmful to plants.
  • Therefore, these plants avoid photorespiration by forming a wreath-like structure composed of bundle sheath cells called kranz anatomy.

This divides the stages of photosynthesis in different cells, carbon fixation takes place in the mesophyll cells near the stomata where the PEP carboxylase converts the carbon to oxaloacetate which is then transported to bundle sheath cells where the oxaloacetate forms the carbon dioxide around the Rubisco enzyme.

The Calvin cycle then proceeds and form the glucose molecule in the bundle sheath cells.
