Top down approach refers to slicing or successive cutting of a bulk material to get nano sized particle. There are two approaches for synthesis of nanomaterials and the fabrication of nano structures. ... Bottom-up refers to methods where devices 'create themselves' by selfassembly. Chemical synthesis is a good example.

There are two methods of synthesis or creation of nanomaterials (nanoparticles). In the first method, a large section is successively cut down into smaller pieces, to obtain nanomaterial. The second method involves, growing particles from very fine nuclear or molecular material, until the desired nanoparticle is obtained.

The study of controlling matter on an atomic or molecular scale, is known as Nanotechnology.
