Industrially it can be made by the reaction of white phosphorus with sodium or potassium hydroxide, producing potassium or sodium hypophosphite as a by-product. 3 KOH + P4 + 3 H2O → 3 KH2PO2 + PH3. Alternatively the acid-catalyzed disproportioning of white phosphorus yields phosphoric acid and phosphine.
