Under the system of Subsidiary Alliance the Indian Rulers were not allowed to have their own armed forces. They were to be protected by the Company but had to pay for the Subsidiary forces that the company was providing for the purpose of protection. If any Indian Ruler fails in making the payment a part of their territory would be annexed by the British as penalty. The states which had to lose their territory on this ground were Hyderabad and Awadh.
