Subsidiary Alliance was basically a treaty signed between the British East India Company and the princely states of India, in which most of the Indian Kingdoms lost their sovereignty. It was a big step in the building of the EEIC.
The main principles of a subsidiary alliance were: Indian rulers had to accept British forces within his territory and also agreed to pay for their maintenance. The ruler would accept a British Resident in his state. If the ruler wants to enter another kingdom he/she had to seek the permission of the British.
