Before the French Revolution, the society in France was divided in three parts - Clergy, Nobility and the peasants (third estate). Since the clergy and the nobility did not contribute anything to the national treasure (they did not work but they received a salary from the court), it was the peasants who were exploited. They had to pay heavy taxes to compensate for the lack of contribution from Clergy and Nobility. It was from these taxes that the state was run and the salaries of the clergy and nobles were paid.
