A chemical equation shows the reaction of reactants to give products. The chemical equation in which the number of atoms of each element in the reactants is equal to the number of atoms of each element in the products is called the balanced chemical equation.

According to the law of conservation of mass, the mass of each element in the products and the mass of each element in the reactants of a chemical reaction should be equal as the atoms of each element does not change during a chemical reaction. This is why chemical equations should be balanced.

Example: 2Fe2O3 + 3C  →  4Fe + 3CO2

Here the number of iron atoms is the same on both sides of the equation that is 4. Similarly, the number of atoms of oxygen and carbon is the same on both sides of the equation.
