According to the Doctrine of Lapse introduced by Lord Dalhousie, if any Indian ruler died without leaving a male heir, his kingdom passed over to the British. Due to Doctrine of Lapse, many states like Jhansi, Satara, Jaitpur, Sambhalpur, Nagpur etc. were annexed by the Company.
