Functional groups is a group of atoms responsible for the characteristic reactions of a particular compound.
Functional groups are specific groups of atoms within molecules that have very characteristic properties regardless of the other atoms present in a molecule. You're probably familiar with several of them by now – alcohols, amines, carboxylic acids, ketones, and ethers are all common examples.

Functional groups are specific atoms, ions, or groups of atoms having consistent properties. A functional group makes up part of a larger molecule. For example, -OH, the hydroxyl group that characterizes alcohols, is an oxygen with a hydrogen attached.
