Explanation:

The amount of solute present in dissolved state in a given amount of solvent is called concentration.

The concentration of a solution can be defined as the amount in grams ( mass ) of solute present in 100 grams of ( mass ) solution or the amount ( mass ) in grams of solute present in 100 ml of the solution.

So we use mass percentage to find the concentration of a solution.

Mass percentage =

 \frac{mass \: of \: solute}{mass \: of \: solution \: } \times 100

Example :

  1. A solution contains 2g of common salt in 18g of water. Calculate the concentration of the solution.

sol :

Mass of solute ( salt ) = 2g

Mass of slovent ( water ) = 18g

Mass of solution = Mass of solute + Mass of solvent = 2g + 18g = 20g

Mass percentage of the solution =

 \frac{mass \: of \: solute}{mass \: of \: solution} \times 100

 = \frac{2}{20} \times 100 = 10\%

therefore, concentration of the solution = 10 % ( by using mass percentage ).
