The urethral sphincter can be used to control micturition. Voiding urine begins with voluntary relaxation of the external sphincter muscle of the bladder. Parasympathetic impulses induce contractions of the bladder and relaxation of the internal sphincter[18]. ... This involuntary urination is called incontinence.

Micturition The discharge of urine from the bladder. It is brought about by reflex contraction of the detrusor muscle after voluntary relaxation of the sphincter muscle at the junction of the bladder with the urethra.

The internal urethral sphincter relaxes, allowing for urine to pass out of the bladder into the urethra. Both of these reactions are involuntary. The external urethral sphincter is voluntary. It must be relaxed for urine to flow through the urethra and outside the body.
