The presence of a mountain or a hill in the path of moisture-laden winds forces the air mass to ascend along the slope leading to cooling of rising air. This leads to condensation and causes rainfall. Such rainfall is called relief or orographic rainfall. The windward side of the mountain receives heavier rainfall compared to the leeward side.
