when a single structure of a molecule is enable to describe the properties. so more than one structure are required to explain the whole properties ,this phenomenon is known as resonance and these structures are known as resonating structure or canonical structure.

Resonance is a way of describing delocalized electrons within benzene (and other molecules) where the bonding cannot be expressed by one single Lewis structure (Lewis structures give the connectivity between atoms in a molecule; they tell you nothing about the arrangement of the atoms of a molecule in 3D)
