RICE is a mnemonic acronym for four elements of treatment for soft tissue injuries: rest, ice, compression, and elevation. The mnemonic was introduced by Gabe Mirkin in 1978. He has since recanted his support for the regimen.

RICE stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Most mild injuries, such as knee or ankle sprains or strained muscles, heal with RICE.
