A species is defined as a group of individual that can reproduce with one another and produce fertile offspring.

Example : Humans ( Homo sapiens ).

In the example above Homo sapiens means the biological name of the humans.

Species means an organism of a particular kind whose members can interbreed among themselves to produce fertile young ones. All individuals of a species can normally breed among themselves. Individuals of a particular species differ from all other living beings.

Categories higher than species –

  • Gᴇɴᴜs – similar species constitute the next higher category called genus.
  • Fᴀᴍɪʟʏ – A group of genera with certain common characteristics form a family.
  • Oʀᴅᴇʀ – A group of related families make an order.
  • Cʟᴀss – Related order makes a class
  • Pʜʏʟᴜᴍ – A phylum is the largest division. Related classes makes phylum.
  • Kɪɴɢᴅᴏᴍ – The kingdom is the largest division. Related phylum makes kingdom.
