The Ancient Regime divided society into three estates.

  • Catholic priests and government officials comprised the First Estate.
  • The clergy can ask for a ten percent tithe in addition to keeping birth, death, and marriage records.
  • Except for the King, the Second Estate was made up of French aristocracy, including members of the royal family.
  • The Second Estate was not subject to taxes.
  • They were also given special abilities, such as hunting and swordsmanship.
  • They, like the clergy, collected taxes from the Third Estate.
  • The Third Estate included everyone from peasant farmers to the affluent.
  • While the Second Estate accounted for only 1% of France's population, the Third Estate accounted for 96% and received none of the benefits that the other two estates did.
  • According to historians, the Third Estate's dissatisfaction, which demanded a more equitable distribution of money and power, was one of the reasons for the French Revolution.
