third estate consisted of the common people. It was bound to pay the taxes .On the other hand 1st and 2nd estate were free from paying the taxes

the French society in 18th century was divided into 3 estates.

1st estate - clergy

2nd estate - Nobles

these two 1st and 2nd were previleged estates.

whereas the 3rd estate consisted common people like farmers, business men, shopkeepers etc.

they were non-previleged. they had to pay taxes.

the 3rd estate was divided further in two groups.

active and passive.

only the active members were allowed to vote and the passive weren't.

active members were those who could pay their three day's wages. so they were allowed to vote.

the 3rd estate during that period had to suffer a lot.
