When a plane polarised light passes through a a solution of certain organic substances ( like glucose, lactic acid, etc ), the plane of plane polarised light gets rotated through a certain angle ( right or left ).

This property or phenomenon of certain organic substances to rotate the plane of plane polarised light towards right or towards left is called "Optical Activity"
